July in Seattle is one of my favorite times for family photography. The wildflowers are blooming, the evenings are long, and the warm summer light makes everything feel nostalgic. For this session, we explored Discovery Park before heading down to the beach for sunset.
These Discovery Park family photos were especially meaningful because Natalie is a fellow wedding photographer herself. Since we both spend so much of our time documenting other people’s stories, it was such a treat to photograph her family and create something personal for them.
We started among the wildflowers and tall grasses, where Natalie wore the most beautiful backless blue dress. The color looked incredible against the soft greens and golden summer landscape. Rather than focusing on stiff poses, I encouraged the family to move, play, cuddle, and simply enjoy their time together.

As a result, these Discovery Park family photos feel candid and genuine. I wanted to capture the little moments between the traditional portraits — spontaneous laughter, hugs, movement, and the unique connection between each family member.
For the wildflower portion, I photographed on Fuji 400H film, which beautifully captured the soft greens and warm summer tones. Then, as we made our way to the beach, I switched to Kodak Portra 800 for the lower evening light. The combination of film grain, ocean air, and golden sunset created a beautifully nostalgic feeling.
Ultimately, that’s what I love about Discovery Park family photos. The location offers so much variety, from wildflower-covered fields to the beach, while still allowing the session to feel relaxed and natural.
These Discovery Park family photos are a reminder that family photography doesn’t have to feel overly posed. Instead, we can slow down, enjoy an evening together, and preserve the little moments that make this season of life yours.
